Areina Roman - She Did Surgery for Her Health

by June Zaragoza, MPH, RD, LD

Areina Roman decided to have weight loss surgery for many good reasons, all related to her health.  At her highest weight of 275 lbs she states, “I started getting short of breath [from asthma].  They put me in a wheelchair to get around.  My cholesterol was high, my triglycerides were almost 1,000 and I had high blood pressure.  I had diabetes and was put on insulin.  My health is what decided me to have this done.”

She did diet.  “I tried everything else, pills.  I lost 20 lbs, but then gained it back.  I did six small meals, but they started getting bigger.  I can’t do it by myself.  Dr. Siegel chose the LAP-BAND® because it was less invasive with all my medical issues.  I wanted to keep all my stuff [insides].”

And how does she feel a year and a half later being 115 lbs down from her highest weight?  “I love that I lost weight.  I can breathe now.  I don’t have to use the chair as much.  I still have my asthma meds, but no diabetes and my cholesterol went way down.”  She also says, “I love the way I’m looking.  Men are attracted to me.  I feel kinda sexy.”  But, she adds quickly, “that’s not why I did it.  It was for my health and my health is better.”
