Leonardo Figueroa: Without the Surgery I was Close to Death
by
June Zaragoza, MPH, RD, LD
Before surgery Leonardo says, “I wasn’t able to walk. I had a pain in my legs. I couldn’t shower myself. I couldn’t reach myself or change my clothes. I had to get help from my wife. I wasn’t able to breathe.” Even worse he felt like he was going to die from a stroke. “I was taken to the hospital for chest pain.” The decision for him was to choose life or continue to die. He chose to have the gastric bypass.
After the surgery he states, “In the beginning it was very hard. I was experiencing vomiting and a lot of pain in my stomach. The drain was painful. A lot of discomforts.” He had diarrhea for three months and got dehydrated. He had to sip fluids throughout the day to correct this.
But now, after losing over 90 lbs he states, “I’m able to walk, breathe, change, and shower myself.” All the discomforts got better and he is very thankful to Vista and Dr. Gibson for doing the surgery. He would also like to thank his family for the support they gave him. Now he wants to continue to lose weight by eating healthy foods and walking twice a day despite arthritis in his leg. His wife is “very, very happy.” She cooks the right foods for him and tells him to walk again so that he can lose even more weight.
