"I Wanted to be a Role Model for my Kids."
Yolanda is very clear about what prompted her to apply for weight loss surgery. She says, "I almost hit 300 lbs. That scared me. I was done having kids, and it was time for me. It was mostly for my health. Both my parents have diabetes and hypertension. I wanted to be a role model for my kids to look up to."
The process of applying was hard and took years. She finally switched doctors and got approved a month later. She chose the gastric band because the weight loss was slower and she felt it would give her body time to adjust. Also, it was more discreet, and she could be private about it. Now, after losing 125 lbs., she tells everyone she is proud about it.
The one-night stay in the hospital was "great." The only pain was from the port site. She added, "They would make me get up – it felt better and better."
Having the band has been hard work, but she is used to it now. "I had to give up the things I like. But, I don't crave stuff anymore. I know I shouldn't eat it. I try a little bit, get it out of my system," states Yolanda. She remembers 4 to 5 fills, but hasn't had an adjustment since August. She felt like her weight was stuck, but she increased her exercise. She is now way more active, "flying at work." Overall she says, "I don't regret it at all, no pain or complications. I'm very happy at how things turned out."
