Scope of Diabetes, Need for Wound Care
Diabetes now affects more than 23 million people in the
United States. It is estimated that approximately 15% of
these people will develop a foot ulcer in their lifetime. Such
ulcers may lead to subsequent wound infections,
progressive tissue loss, resulting amputations, morbidity
and/or death if left untreated. Historical data proves that
aggressive wound care management by a wound care
specialist can prevent dire or unacceptable outcomes.
By working with Vista Health System’s team of wound
care physicians, nurses, technicians and their ancillary
support personnel, patients have the best possible
opportunity for positive wound outcomes. Each of the
professionals at the Advanced Wound Center aim to treat
wounds before they progress into a more serious health
related problem. If a wound has already progressed to a
more complicated state, our wound center houses the
necessary tools and the advanced therapies needed to
promote wound healing. Our goal is to prevent limb
amputation by identifying the cause of non-healing and
correcting the underlying contributing condition so you go on
living a happy and healthy lifestyle.
Hyperbaric Oxygen and Diabetic Wounds
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) is one of the many
advanced treatment options available for patients with
wounds that seek care at Vista Health System’s Advanced
Wound Center. The application of this therapy is used
adjunctively with an aggressive multidisciplinary therapeutic
clinical pathway and is effective in decreasing the likelihood
of resulting amputations in diabetic patients with severe
neuropathic and/or ischemic foot ulcers. HBO can also
improve a patient’s response to local soft tissue and bone
infection.
