Vista Health System Schedules First Open Heart Surgery Case

Waukegan, Ill., 12/12/07--In June of this year the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board unanimously approved Vista Health System’s application to begin performing open heart surgeries.  Since the approval, Vista has been targeting mid-December to perform its first open heart surgery case.  Under the Medical Direction of Dr. David J. Cziperle (zip-ur-lee), the first case is scheduled to be performed during the week of December 17th at Vista Medical Center East.

Dr. Cziperle is a Fellow with the American College of Surgeons, is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and is currently licensed in four states.  He has been named as an Assistant Professor at Loyola University Medical Center in the Department of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery.  This decorated physician is also currently serving as the President of the Illinois Thoracic Surgical Society.  In September of this year, Dr. Cziperle added the title of Medical Director to his very impressive resume.

In the past months, Dr. Cziperle has been working with Vista’s staff on an active training regiment.  After months of preparation, the cardiac team is fully trained and prepared to assist the experienced cardio-thoracic surgeon with Vista’s first open heart surgery.

“I am delighted to announce that the cardiac team at Vista Medical Center East has remained on target to begin open heart surgeries.  The long hours and dedication these specially trained professionals have spent, is a testament to our expectations of excellence.  Ultimately our community wins with the launch of Vista’s new Open Heart Surgery program, as critically ill patients will now be closer than ever to advanced cardiac care.”  said Barbara J. Martin, President and Chief Executive Officer for Vista Health System.

Having the ability to perform open heart surgeries will allow the public local access to a wide variety of advanced cardiac care. Major life-saving techniques this program will allow include coronary artery bypass grafts, heart valve repairs and replacements and other thoracic and vascular surgeries.

In addition to beginning open heart surgeries, Vista is set to begin a $7 Million renovation to the Intensive Care Unit.  This entire program is part of Vista’s $70 Million commitment to its Waukegan facilities.
