Vista Health System’s First Open Heart Surgery a Success!

Waukegan, Ill., 12/21/07--In June of this year the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board unanimously approved Vista Health System’s application to begin performing open heart surgeries.  Since the approval, Vista has been targeting mid-December to perform its first open heart surgery case.  Under the Medical Direction of Dr. David J. Cziperle (zip-ur-lee), the first case was successfully performed on the morning of December 20th at Vista Medical Center East.

“I am delighted to announce that the Open Heart Surgery program at Vista Medical Center East has successfully performed their first case.   Dr. David Cziperle, the Medical Director for this new program, has been working with our surgical team for several months in preparation for this day.”, said Barbara J. Martin, President and CEO of Vista Health System.  “This success dawns a new day in healthcare for the residents of Lake County.  Today, cardiac healthcare is locally available to more people in Lake County than ever before.”

Having the ability to perform open heart surgeries will allow the public local access to a wide variety of advanced cardiac care.  Major life-saving techniques this program will allow include coronary artery bypass grafts, heart valve repairs and replacements and other thoracic and vascular surgeries.

In addition to beginning open heart surgeries, Vista is set to begin a $7 Million renovation to the Intensive Care Unit.  This entire program is part of Vista’s $70 Million commitment to its Waukegan facilities.
