Vista Health System Announces Opening of the Orthopedic & Joint Center at Vista Medical Center East

Waukegan, Ill., 08/28/07--Vista Health System is proud to announce the opening of the new Orthopedic & Joint Center, located at Vista Medical Center East.  This newly renovated facility will house an advanced system for major joint replacement and is designed to rapidly return patients to their homes, with significant progress in their physical therapy needs.

Vista’s Orthopedic & Joint Center will employ a system that is designed to return patients to their home within days.  Surgeries for the Center will be targeted for Mondays and Tuesdays of each week.  Then, working with their self designated coach and Vista’s talented staff, the patient will begin rehabilitation in a community environment.  This community of patients will strive to reach a set of goals and motivate one another in a team environment.  Systems of this type have been successful in other regions of the country, but this is the first to be instituted in this area.

Dr. Bruce Summerville of Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, Ltd; Lake Shore Orthopaedics, has undertaken the role of medical director for this new facility.  Dr. Summerville stated, “Combining a talented collection of surgeons, a dedicated team of nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and a proven system, benefits patients.  I am thrilled to offer this new system.”

Barbara Martin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Vista Health System stated, “Our new Orthopedic & Joint Center will usher in a new era of what patients will expect before, during and after major joint replacement.  Bringing this new program to our community will continue to define Vista Health System as the local leader in advanced medical practices.”

This new program is part of Vista’s $70 million re-investment into its existing facilities in Waukegan.  Previously, Vista has renovated its Emergency Department, began operating an urgent care facility at Vista Medical Center West, installed a dedicated Cardiac Catheterization Lab and updated its GI Labs.   Currently, Vista is undertaking a $7 million renovation of its Intensive Care Unit.  The next step in the reinvestment project is to begin open heart surgeries this winter.
