YWCA Women of Achievement Awards Benefit on
May 5, Barbara J. Martin, President and CEO
of Vista Health and Victory Health Services,
received YWCA Lake Countys 2006 Through
the Glass Ceiling award. This award
celebrates women within an organization who
have not only broken through the glass ceiling
but have also provided help and/or mentored
other women on the way.
Martin
was nominated for this award based on her
leadership and vision during times of change
at Vista Health. Since her appointment as
President and CEO of Vista Health and Victory
Health Services in June 2005, Martin has negotiated
the consolidation of acute care services with
the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board,
signed a letter of intent with Community Health
Systems to position Vista Health for future
growth and delivered the first profitable
financial results for Vista Health in the
past five years. She has also initiated renovation
projects to accommodate the increasing patient
census at Victory Memorial Hospital, Waukegan.
As a champion for those who are underserved,
she strives to make sure critically needed
health programs remain accessible to this
population.

Martin
has over 25 years experience in the healthcare
field. She began as a staff nurse at Ingalls
Memorial Hospital, Harvey, Illinois, where
she later became Director of Nursing. Martin
then moved to Saint Margaret and Mercy Health
Centers, Hammond, Indiana, where she served
as Vice President Patient Services/Chief Nursing
Officer. In 1990, she became Vice President
Hospital Operations and Ambulatory Services
at Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center, Joliet,
Illinois, where she served for eight years
before becoming System Vice President/Clinical
Operations/System Improvement for the Provena
Health system in Frankfort,Illinois. As an
independent contractor, Martin served as the
interim Vice President for Patient Services
Operations from 2002 to 2003 for Temple University
Hospital, Episcopal Hospital and Temple Childrens
Medical Center, Pennsylvania. In January 2003,
Martin became Chief Operating Officer for
Vista Health and then, in June 2005, President
and CEO. Vista Health includes both Victory
Memorial Hospital and Saint Therese Medical
Center in Waukegan, the Vista Surgery and
Treatment Center in Lindenhurst, as well as
the Vista MR Institute, Vista Imaging Center,
Vista Physical Medicine and Vista Work Power
Center facilities in Gurnee.
