Waukegan, IL – With the help of a slight modification in the operating room, patients are now able to have a more natural birthing experience when they undergo a Cesarean section in the New Family Center at Vista Medical Center East, 1324 N. Sheridan Rd., Waukegan.
The new method, called “Gentle Cesarean,” allows for some elements of natural childbirth to occur while patients are having surgery. At the patients’ request, they can now have a clear drape added to the area where the traditional blue surgical drape is used to provide a sterile environment. The clear drape offers a way to make a C-section more family centered. It also allows mothers to see and meet their new baby instead of having a surgical drape blocking their view.
“It’s better for mother-baby bonding when the mom can see and touch her new baby immediately after delivery through the clear drape,” said Martin Weiner, MD, OB/GYN.
Dr. Weiner is a member of Vista Physician Group with his office at 3 S. Greenleaf, Gurnee. He can be reached for an appointment at 847-244-0222.
After the baby is born patients are encouraged to continue their experience with skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding in the operating room. These changes support the growing movement to provide a more natural experience in the operating room and are often well received by patients.
“Making these changes in our operating room suites provides our new mothers the opportunity to create a highly satisfying and memorable experience while still having a C-section,” said Erin Riddell, Director of Women and Children Services at Vista Health System.
Second-time mother Ariana Delgado was very pleased with her gentle Cesarean experience. This was her second C-section, and she said this time around she felt a lot more involved and comfortable with the procedure because of the clear drape.
“It was amazing seeing the baby coming out,” said Delgado, one of the first patients at Vista to experience a gentle Cesarean. “It was a great feeling, especially because the baby’s gender was a surprise.”
Those sentiments were echoed by the baby’s father, Fernando Bautista. “I was able to enjoy the process as well. I was very impressed.”
