"I needed to do something. I had a car accident, and they weren’t able to get me out of the car," Jennifer recalls. She survived because of her size, but says, "I didn’t feel I was worthy of them helping me. It was a horrible feeling emotionally." She was also afraid if she ever had a heart attack they wouldn't be able to get her down the stairs.
Jennifer wanted to do weight loss surgery for a while, but didn’t have the money. Finally she got the coverage and started the process. She got the band surgery with board-certified surgeon, Dr. Laurence Gibson, but after a year it was too tight, so she reapplied and had the band taken off and then the gastric bypass surgery.
This time surgery took longer. Jennifer was up and walking after the surgery even though it hurt. By Monday of the next week she was back to babysitting. The weight came off really quickly the first 7 to 8 months. Now, a year later, after being down 185 lbs overall, she states, "It’s wonderful, I felt great." Sometimes she is "still self-conscious about skin every once in a while when wearing new clothes." But overall everything is okay, Jennifer is in good health, working full-time and running around.
